Manningham City Council Server Infrastructure Design

About the client

The City of Manningham is located in the north-eastern suburbs of Melbourne, Victoria. Formed in 1994, Council has more than 116,000 ratepayers and provides approximately 100 services including maintenance of roads, rubbish collection, provision of public housing and the upkeep of parks.

The Project

Manningham Council embarked on an organisation-wide transformation project to streamline all workflows and processes across the organisation in order to deliver the best possible service to ratepayers.

Since its establishment, the Council had relied on a range of system to support its operations. These multiple disparate systems were based on technologies from a number of vendors and complex to manage.

There were 25 physical servers in the computing environment. Ten servers supported key applications. Fifteen servers were configured in multiple VMWare clusters hosting 125 virtual servers. In addition there were multiple disaster recovery systems that were complex to manage. The four racks of computer equipment were also in disarray.

The transformation project required implementation of new infrastructure technology which would enable the organisation to operate efficiently and effectively.

How Onel worked with the client

As the selected technology partner, ONEL consulting worked closely with the Council’s IT team to deliver a solid and scalable infrastructure solution in order to achieve the transformation project objectives.

The new infrastructure solution comprised VMWare, Nimble, CISCO and Veeam technology.

The implementation of the new solution took just 20 days to complete. This included:

set up of both the production and disaster recovery sitesmigration of data from the legacy servers onto the new Nimble SmartStack infrastructure and virtualising physical serversinstalling new Veeam backup softwaretesting the disaster recovery solution.

The outcome and benefits

The Council has a solid, scalable platform with full visibility of their environment via Cloud proactive monitoring and Simplicity of SmartStack solution.

The infrastructure now supports over 120 different applications across the Council which is set to increase as new ones are deployed. Disaster recovery testing can be performed off site and completed in 15 minutes.

The new platform has enabled the Manningham I.T team to complete maintenance tasks less than half the time. Freeing up their time to focus on innovative projects instead of day-to-day maintenance tasks.

What the client said
